Case Study

A United States Marine Corps Veteran struggled for 20 years with the residual effects of head and eye injuries sustained during infantry field exercises at Camp Pendleton, California.  He underwent surgery to correct sight in his left eye, but neither military nor civilian health care professionals could address symptoms of his brain injury, such as the splitting headaches, light sensitivity, sleeping problems, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).  He recalls thinking these issues would forever remain his “new normal.” But life for him began to change when he learned about the Mind-Eye Institute from fellow members of the Chicago Blackhawks Warriors, an ice hockey team for disabled Veterans. He made an appointment at the Mind-Eye in February 2020, all the time wondering “how can a pair of eyeglasses help me.”  After undergoing extensive evaluation, he was prescribed a pair of “brain glasses,” which, within the first 48 hours of wearing them, started making him “feel differently.” The intensity of his headaches dropped from “around 8 to around 3 on a pain scale of 0 to 10,” he said.  Other symptoms also gradually lessened.  After three months of wearing the therapeutic glasses, his reading, comprehension, and memory had improved, and he was rarely experiencing the nightmares that had been causing him to yell out and twitch during sleep.
